EQ Qualities

Having worked in the job for 2 years I am ready to challenge the boundaries and seek higher duties within the organisation through promotion. There are various qualities desired for being a good leader but based on my research of the EQ, the qualities that match my personality are as follows:

  1. Empathy
  2. Motivation
  3. Adaptive to change

This quality really helped me in my growth and will be beneficial for the company as I can lead properly in my new post. I will explain each of the qualities in detail with the relevant example of my accomplishments to prove the effectiveness of this qualities and EQ I have.

Empathy: It is the ability to put yourself in other's shoes. Being a leader you need to be able to feel how your team's position. Having empathy is critical in order to manage a team. It helps to earn the loyalty and respect form your team members, being empathic shows that you care about them.

Now a time I demonstrated this was during a busy refund time in our office. Refund does not fall under my duties but since it was a busy time, I offered to help my colleagues and we cleared all the refund in that day by staying till 10:00 pm in the evening. This act helped me gain his friendship as I understood how much pressure he was into clear the refund.

Motivation: There is a time where everyone feels down but keeping your self-motivated help to elevate the level of motivation in others which can ultimately help in efficient work outcomes. Motivated leaders work constantly towards their goal and have extremely high standards for the quality of their work.

I always remind myself why I did this job and this keeps me motivated furthermore I try to be optimistic and keep myself my motivated by trying to find at least one good thing even from a bad work. Like the time we had a mistake in a sending student the receivable letter. I understood that it was the process mistake. I didn't let my guard down and worked to improve the process for the next time so that we do not repeat the same mistake when we send the letter next time.

Adaptive to change: Next qualities that a leader needs is to be adaptive to change and should not be afraid of the change. We need to understand that change is a necessity of life in order to evolve and be better.  we should embrace the change and adapt to change accordingly.

As an international student coming from the comfort of the home and studying doesn't show the adaptiveness. Working from different work culture compared to your home culture can clearly demonstrate that I adapt to change and is understand the necessity of change for the betterment.

I think having all this ability helps me to work in the position. If you promote me, further to my technical skills this EQ will provide me with the perfect blend to lead my team and work together to improve a company. We can come up with an innovative idea if provided the opportunity. Hence, I think you should consider me for the position.

Work Place Diversity

Workplace diversity refers to the variety of differences between people in an organization.

That sounds simple, but diversity encompasses race, gender, ethnic group, age, personality, cognitive style, tenure, organizational function, education, background and more.

Diversity not only involves how people perceive themselves, but how they perceive others. Those perceptions affect their interactions. For a wide assortment of employees to function effectively as an organization, human resource professionals need to deal effectively with issues such as

communication, adaptability and change. Diversity will increase significantly in the coming years. Successful organizations recognize the need for immediate action and are ready and willing to spend resources on managing diversity in the workplace now.

Benefits of Workplace Diversity
An organization’s success and competitiveness depends upon its ability to embrace diversity and realize the benefits. When organizations actively assess their handling of workplace diversity issues, develop and implement diversity plans, multiple benefits are reported such as:

Increased adaptability
Organizations employing a diverse workforce can supply a greater variety of solutions to problems in service, sourcing, and allocation of resources. Employees from diverse backgrounds bring individual talents and experiences in suggesting ideas that are flexible in adapting to fluctuating markets and customer demands.

Broader service range
A diverse collection of skills and experiences (e.g. languages, cultural understanding) allows a company to provide service to customers on a global basis.

Variety of viewpoints
A diverse workforce that feels comfortable communicating varying points of view provides a larger pool of ideas and experiences. The organization can draw from that pool to meet business strategy needs and the needs of customers more effectively.

More effective execution
Companies that encourage diversity in the workplace inspire all of their employees to perform to their highest ability. Company-wide strategies can then be executed; resulting in higher productivity, profit, and return on investment.

Challenges of Diversity in the Workplace
Taking full advantage of the benefits of diversity in the workplace is not without its challenges. Some of those challenges are:

Communication - Perceptual, cultural and language barriers need to be overcome for diversity programs to succeed. Ineffective communication of key objectives results in confusion, lack of teamwork, and low morale.

Resistance to change - There are always employees who will refuse to accept the fact that the social and cultural makeup of their workplace is changing. The “we’ve always done it this way” mentality silences new ideas and inhibits progress.

Implementation of diversity in the workplace policies - This can be the overriding challenge to all diversity advocates. Armed with the results of employee assessments and research data, they must build and implement a customized strategy to maximize the effects of diversity in the workplace for their particular organization.

Successful Management of Diversity in the Workplace - Diversity training alone is not sufficient for your organization’s diversity management plan. A strategy must be created and implemented to create a culture of diversity that permeates every department and function of the organization.

Recommended steps that have been proven successful in world-class organizations are:
Assessment of diversity in the workplace - Top companies make assessing and evaluating their diversity process an integral part of their management system. A customizable employee satisfaction survey can accomplish this assessment for your company efficiently and conveniently. It can help your management team determine which challenges and obstacles to diversity are present in your workplace and which policies need to be added or eliminated. Reassessment can then determine the success of you diversity in the workplace plan implementation.

Development of diversity in the workplace plan - Choosing a survey provider that provides comprehensive reporting is a key decision. That report will be the beginning structure of your diversity in the workplace plan. The plan must be comprehensive, attainable and measurable. An organization must decide what changes need to be made and a timeline for that change to be attained.

Implementation of diversity in the workplace plan - The personal commitment of executive and managerial teams is a must. Leaders and managers within organizations must incorporate diversity policies into every aspect of the organization’s function and purpose. Attitudes toward diversity originate at the top and filter downward. Management cooperation and participation is required to create a culture conducive to the success of your organization’s plan.

Recommended diversity in the workplace solutions include:
Ward off change resistance with inclusion. - Involve every employee possible in formulating and executing diversity initiatives in your workplace.

Foster an attitude of openness in your organization. - Encourage employees to express their ideas and opinions and attribute a sense of equal value to all.

Promote diversity in leadership positions. - This practice provides visibility and realizes the benefits of diversity in the workplace.

Utilize diversity training. - Use it as a tool to shape your diversity policy.

Launch a customizable employee satisfaction survey that provides comprehensive reporting. - Use the results to build and implement successful diversity in the workplace policies.

As the economy becomes increasingly global, our workforce becomes increasingly diverse. Organizational success and competitiveness will depend on the ability to manage diversity in the workplace effectively. Evaluate your organization’s diversity policies and plan for the future, starting today.

Good Minute Post

Hi Everyone,

While going for a meeting it is important that we take a minute to reflect on the instant decision. While taking minute is important this is some common mistake which we make while taking, this how you can avoid while taking one.

  1. Missing the quorum data
  2. Vague description and resolution Meeting minute
  3. Not making and distributing agenda before meeting

We can easily forget to record the quorum data in the meeting minute. If we forget to include this detail then minute will not be valid as it is a legal document for taking action.

We can avoid this mistake by taking the attendance before meeting and stating whether we have required a number to make a decision as required by the company law.

Secondly, a common mistake is to use the vague word to describe the action of the meeting. If it's vague and not straight forward it will not reflect the issues and resolution correctly

We can avoid this by using precise wording and not writing any vague decision taken during the meeting.

Thirdly,  not distributing agenda before is a major mistake that we need to avoid as if we do not distribute agenda before hand, people will not have an idea about the meeting. If people don't have an idea of what they are taking the meeting will just be a conversation and no real out come will be achieved.

We can avoid this by preparing agenda before hand and send the copy to all the attendant of the meeting at least a day in advance. This will help them to prepare for the meeting and come up with ideas to speak for the meeting.

Now, let's move to the point how we can capture all the information and review them in the same day?

Firstly, to record the meeting one would be to take written notes and minutes. Similarly, we can record key points visible, such as on news print or a chalkboard. Lastly, the best way to record would be by using audio tape, but occasionally by videotape as well. This will be of great record and we can review it and listen to it at a later time.

Skills needed to improve note taking Skills

Here is some basic method that I think everyone can use to improve their note taking skills

  • Come to meeting prepared
  • Improve listing skills by listening to news channels
  • Develop a note taking method that you are familiar or easy with
  • Have close attention to content
  • Use abbreviation or symbol when ever possible.

Interview

Before you get your dream job there are various barriers that you have to pass through and one of them is the interview.  While it seems easy at first to nail an interview there are various things you have to consider and keep in mind to nail an interview and get a job that you wanted to have.

First, research is the key to success. If you have been called by the company you applied for a job you need to do a lot of research regarding the company. When you research it means it has to have a purpose. There is no point in researching random facts about the company. You need to research about the job, the work that you need to do the job and about company mission, vision, objectives etc. so that it can be reflected in your answer during the interview.

Secondly, it is important to keep calm and take a deep breath before you answer anything and if your unsure about the question or how to tackle it is better to ask the interviewer to repeat question than answer it wrongly.

Similarly, presentation and dress code are important. You cannot show up in an interview in casual dress up. This is the first impression and it plays a vital role.

Finally, when giving an answer to question try to give your answer in a STAR model way. Have a direct eye contact with the interviewer and speak in a consistent and calm voice. If you change your tone and add UM Uhaa while speaking it make you look like you are unprepared. Hence it is better to wait for a second and answer.  Body gestures need to maintain as well while giving an interview.

These are the few things that you need to keep in mind if you want to ace an interview and get you dream job.

Discrimination

Introduction and Type

The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex is known as discrimination.

There are various types of discrimination
  1. Direct Discrimination
  2. Indirect discrimination
  3. Victimisation
It's against the law to discriminate someone because of a characteristic that you have, or that someone assumes you have. The personal characteristics include
  1. Age
  2. Parental status
  3. Disability (Including Physical, sensory and intellectual disability, work-related injury, medical conditions, and mental psychological and learning disabilities)
  4. Employment activity
  5. gender identity, lawful sexual activity, and sexual orientation
  6. Industrial activity
  7. Marital status
  8. Physical Features
  9. Political belief or activity
  10. Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  11. Race ( Including Colour, nationality, ethnicity and ethnic origin)
  12. Religious belief or activity
  13. Sex
  14. Expunged homosexual conviction
  15. Personal association with someone who has, or is assumed to have, one of these personal characteristics
If you reside in Victoria you can make a lodge a complaint online or call them at 1300292153 or download a complaint form. The website for it is Making A complaint against a discrimination

Discrimination can occur in different places
Under the Equal Opportunity Act, 2010 discrimination is against the law when it occurs in an area of public life such as clubs, schools, and shops, or in the workplace. The public places include:

  1. Accommodation
  2. clubs
  3. Education
  4. Employment
  5. Goods and services
  6. Land sales and transfers
  7. Local government
  8. Sports
In a nutshell, it's against the law to discriminate anyone and if you feel like you have been discriminated please notify the authorized person in your workplace or to police.

Personal Experience

Now even I had an experience of discrimination and it was in the street while returning towards my home. I was walking down the street when people coming from the car started shouting and saying to "go where you came from".

At that time I felt terrified as well as they stopped the car and started to follow me. I was bit nervous and terrified as this was my first encounter of discrimination. I called my friends and ran towards my home as quickly as I can.

Now I think of it if I ever get in that situation again, I would talk with them to stop it and if ti didn't work I would call the police.

Lastly, have a safe day and rise against any discrimination.

Promoting WHS

Work Health and Safety is important in work place and there are various ways to raise awareness to health and safety in work place.Regular communication and promotion of WHS themes raises the awareness of workers and visitors. WHS promotion helps to reinforce a safety culture and is an integral part of the Health and Safety (HS) Committee.

Review your incident and accident statistics and look at new ways of increasing accident awareness among managers and workers.
 You could:

  •  Present the accident statistics such as ―X days worked since the last accident‖ on notice boards, in newsletters, via email, etc.
  •  Use something visual to measure the number of days since the last accident i.e. a thermometer that goes up one 1 degree for each day since the last accident, and drops back to zero should there be an accident.
  •  Set formal targets for the Area/Network Facility/Service to achieve, e.g. working 100,000 hours without a lost-time injury (roughly equivalent to 50 people working fulltime for one year, or one person working over a lifetime).
  • During safety week, you could award ―spot prizes‖ for workers that are seen to act safely.
Breakfasts and barbecues
Have a workers breakfast or BBQ.

  • Some ideas to add interest to a breakfast or BBQ: Display balloons or banners with safety message. Invite a guest speaker.
  • Hand out WHS and IM information sheets.
  • Present novelty items such as caps, tee-shirts, etc. Announce winners of safety poster competition. Announce the  of upcoming safety and injury management events i.e. seminars and training sessions. Present an award for best workers suggestion for improving
  • WHS or the ―most improved Department‖.
  •  Hold a safety quiz.

Consider setting up a health and safety display in a suitable place where workers spend time — such as the cafeteria, workers lunch rooms or the local libraries.
Safety announcement from management. Posters. Safety hints/reminders. Information sheets. Photographs. Occupational safety and health publications.
